Sounds like you need a tranny. Without knowing what year and make of car I would say the generic answer is your tranny is trying to shift into 2 ranges at the same time causing it to lock up internally and shutting off your engine (probably very violently). Another possibility (if you have a lock up torque converter) is that your lock up converter is applying when you shift into reverse. Get a pro to diagnose it.
I would replace the neutral safety switch; Buy it from the Ford dealer where they can print out the picture of it along with its location. I hope this helps you. Mark
Maybe just a linkage adjustment Will it start in Neutral, Reverse, or Drive??
It needs to be in park or neutral to start. All cars have a "safety" switch which prevents starting in gear.
Could it be the Neutral Safety Switch is out of alignment? Thinks Reverse is Neutral? I don't know Rovers, but there is a safety switch in vehicles with Automatic Transmissions, that prohibit the vehicle from being started in a Driver or Reverse gear.
For the Reverse problem, you could have low transmission fluid, or a bad transmission. For starting in drive, just about every modern car will not start when the transmission is in gear. They will only start in Park or Neutral. This is a safety feature to prevent the car from taking off into someone or something when started.
try to change the netural safety switch that should fix the problem
A neutral safety switch makes sure that the gear select is either in neutral, or park, befor a car is allowed to start. No, it will not stop a trans for allowing you to put it in reverse.
it's not supose to startin drive, what kind of question is that * It is possible that you meant Park, and not Drive. If this is the case, your shift linkage may be in need of adjustment as the vehicle may not be registering that it is out of reverse, and therefore not allow it to start. Try lifting the shift lever while you try to start the vehicle. if this works, you may just need a little adjustment, or some new bushings in the linkage possible bad neutral switch
it is bolted to the transmission case, it controls park, reverse, nuetural, drive, second, first, and if it isn't in park or neutral your car wont start, so make sure it is connected to your shifter. if that doesnt correct the problem the it could be the pump or torque converter bolts have fell out tk
The amount needed will depend on how long the pan was off. Start with three quarts, start engine, shift through drive and reverse. You the check the level idling in neutral. Add fluid slowly until at proper level.
start the car and put in drive or reverse
check the neutral safety switch. Mine does the same thing. also you might not have reverse lights.
