If an iPod classic freezes, normally reset fixes most common problems (hold down menu and play buttons for a few seconds). If this does not work, and you have clicking noises, this could mean the hard drive inside the iPod is either damaged or not sitting in its frame properly. Best is to have it looked at by someone professional.
Simple way to look at it is, if your PC hard drive starts clicking means its about time for a change before all your data is lost
