still being friends with him is a pretty good way to go, but another relatioship might take a while, or take no time at all, it all depends on what you two are thinking and when you take that chance. but i recommend staying friends, and wait until he`ll make the first move, or you can if you really want. but to make it up to them, i recommend doing something that will make them feel special.
