Buy, rent or borrow an OBDII (On Board Diagnostics Rev 2) code scanner and figure out what's going on. The computer is trying to tell you something but you'll have to plug in a code reader to find out what it is.
Yes, it could be major, but just as likely it could be minor. In either case, to avoid the possibility of damaging the engine, you should find out what's wrong and take corrective action.
