He joined Southern Bell Telephone and Telegraph Company, a part of the "Baby Bell" system of the American Telephone and Telegraph Company (AT and T) in 1964. Ackerman's first job with Southern Bell was in the customer service department.
The Bell Telephone Company was founded in 1878 by Alexander Graham Bell's father-in-law Gardiner Greene Hubbard, who also helped organize a sister company - the New England Telephone and Telegraph Company. The two companies merged in 1879 to form the National Bell Telephone Company, which in 1880 merged with others to form the American Bell Telephone Company, which in turn became the American Telephone & Telegraph Company (AT&T).

I am assuming the question is about AT&T. The original company, American Telephone & Telegraph, was founded in 1885. This company was broken up in 1983 as a result of anti-trust action. The modern AT&T started life as Southwestern Bell corporation, one of the Regional Bell Operating Companies. It acquired the parent AT&T in 2005.
