Tie rod, ball joint or Strut.
If a Lincoln LS V8 is making a engine noise when it is shifted into drive or reverse, it could indicate a seized gear in the transmission. It could also indicate a low transmission fluid warning.
Check your power steering fliud, if it is low this could cause the vibration you are feeling.
Try changing the ignition switch located on the steering column
Your 4 wheel drive may be engaged. Take out of 4 wheel drive and put it in reverse. Drive the car in reverse while turning the steering wheel all the way from one side to the other until it disengages.
it will drive but when in reverse it wont move
It's broken!
either it's too low of tranny fluid of the reverse band i gone bad and that means a rebulid is needed.
The same problem with my Lincoln town car. When disassembled the transmission, it was evident that the reverse piston did not move, "valve body" can not reverse the piston to move. All valves tested by documentation. I can not understand the problem!
It is not illegal to drive without power steering. Many people who drive very old cars do not have power steering.
that sounds like your transsion you should have it looked at although you can drive it with out reverse for quite a while
I can start the car in park but when put it in drive or reverse it will cut off then i would put it back in park it will start
With your foot on the brake, put the transmission in drive, then reverse, drive, then reverse. If you hear a clunking noise, think about replacing the U-joint in the drive shaft with a heavy duty unit from NAPA auto parts. Get one that has a grease fitting so you can service it.
