If you have the odd bout of diarrhea and constipation then it's probably a poor diet and not enough water. You should be eating bran, whole grains and lots of other fibers like leafy greens (brussel sprouts, broccoli, etc.) Also at least go for one half walk a day or evening or work out at a gym; ride a bike or go jogging with a friend. If you have bad bouts of diarrhea, feel lethargic, loss of appetite and have more diarrhea than being constipated discuss with your doctor that you would like to be tested for wheat gluten problems. The test is painless and relatively simple. They put a little freezing in your throat, put a small tube down with a camera on the end. The reason I ask you to do the above is my husband started off like you and eventually he had constant diarrhea that left him extremely dehydrated. He was tested for many things which all came back negative. He suddenly because so weak I admitted him into ER and the very last test was a wheat-gluten problem. Neither of us had ever heard of this, but we sure know about it now. It's called CELIAC DISEASE! This means no bran, rye, oats or wheat. Now that we know we have met so many people with this problem. My husband is now doing well and his diet is pretty much the same with the exception of any wheat-gluten products so bread has to be bought from Health Food Stores. He has no diarrhea and is regular in bowel movements once again. I am not trying to scare you, but if all else fails then please have your doctor get you in for that test for Celiac Disease (wheat-gluten.) I'd sure like to hear you are feeling much better.

What diagnostic tools can help diagnose the cause of diarrhea?

Blood tests - Blood tests can sometimes provide information about the cause of chronic diarrhea and the secondary effects of diarrhea on overall health.Complete blood count - A complete blood count (CBC) can detect the anemia that results from long-standing blood loss or inflammation. It can also detect an elevated number of white blood cells, which may signal that diarrhea is being caused by inflammation, infections, allergies, or cancer.Blood chemistry - Blood chemistry tests can detect dehydration and electrolyte (salt and mineral) imbalances, as well as liver problems and nutritional deficiencies.Peptides - Certain rare tumors (such as carcinoid or tumors producing "vasoactive intestinal polypeptide") can produce hormones called peptides that promote diarrhea and can be detected in a blood sample.Antibodies - Tests can detect elevated blood levels of antibodies directed at infectious organisms or antibodies directed at the body's own tissues (called autoantibodies). An example of the latter is an antibody test against tissue transglutaminase. Presence of this autoantibody frequently indicates the presence of celiac disease, a disorder caused by allergy to wheat proteins.Inflammatory markers - The erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) and C-reactive protein (CRP) levels are nonspecific markers of inflammation. Elevation of these markers may signal inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis).
