if you have more than one light switch powering the same thing, that will most likely happen, but if you don't you did something wrong.
You may find that you simply installed the switch upside down and "on" is now the down position. Don't confuse up with on. On a single pole switch, on and off or clearly labeled. If you are using a 3 way switch as a single pole then on and off are not clearly marked and are determined by which terminals you have used. If either of these cases are true for you, just turn the switch over.
If this does not describe your problem, something else is going on and you need a competent electrician to look at it.
