It means You should act somewhat uninterested in him and back off for a few days to a week and see what he does. If after a few days he asks "Why are you being so distant?", Well, then that's what you want to hear. DO NOT BE CLINGY. Guys love a girl they can chase so make him work for it; it keeps the spark in the relationship going.
Give him time: that might be all he needs.
If you're feeling really troubled about his behaviour towards you, possibly you could simply talk with him and ask in an undemanding way how things are and whether there's anything you can do to help. Don't press it and don't push him, just be yourself. There's no need to change the way you behave towards him unless he indicates he'd prefer you to be less - or more - affectionate, or to change in some other way. Then it's up to you to see how you feel about changing.
