There's no real way. The best bet is to create your own criteria and find ways to test people. Perhaps there are certain political, economic or social philosophies you can enquire about that wouldn't necessarily raise suspicion on behalf of the person you ask.
Or, an approach that works for many disenfranchised teens: find a particular occult symbol that is well known, but not necessarily "popular" (a pentagram would not be a good choice). People who can identify the symbol may come and talk to you first.
