The reason that you may not have anything to talk about is probably that ya'll may not know anything about each other or the couple is just shy and don't want anything wrong to come out of their mouths. In order to break the ice ask questions of interest, what they like or dislike, goals and ambition just plain oh get to know each other. Once you find common ground then the conversation is endless. When you have an uncomfortable moment of silence then it always help to throw in a comment towards them, it always appreciated.

I had the same problem. only i asked the girl to the dance, not to go out. what i did, was i told some of her friends i was planning on asking her. they all gave me encouragement. so i just diddnt think about it and went up and asked her. she said no. but that is only because she doesnt like to dance. but i know now that the trick is to take a deep breath, walk up to her, keep eye contact, dont get to close to her, and ask her. just go for it.
