Maybe you need a jump start
Without some very unusual circumstances, it's going to be the car that read-ended the stopped car. There are very few good reasons for running in to the back of a stopped car.
Did it turn over after it stopped running??? Could be too many differant things to list. But i would start by checking for loose or rusted wires going from battery to alternator and starter. Also make sure the ground wire (usually attached to the block) is tight.

I just had my 93 Aerostar 3.0 in for this same problem. My MAF sensor was plugged. Once cleaned, it now runs fine again.
No way man. Unless you own a cutting torch and a welder there is no way your going to be putting in a small block Ford into an Aerostar. Not to mention all the fun your going to have swapping in a different wiring harness and computer.
