Benedict Arnold and his troops created America's first navy out of wilderness in 1776. It was with this navy that the Americans fought the Battle of Valcour Island. More importantly though, Benedict Arnold's greatest contribution to the United States was his leadership and bravery during the Battle of Saratoga. Without Benedict Arnold, the Battle of Saratoga would have been lost; France probably wouldn't have come to America's aid; and Americamight not have become a country. Benedict Arnold did so much for the United States. He shed blood for this country twice! He put his life on the line by serving the American Cause. Not only did he give some of his own money to the Cause, but he gave his brilliant military skill to the American Revolution. Benedict Arnold's role in the making of America is a large one, and that is why he should be remembered as a hero more than as a traitor.
Gen. Hortio Gates was the general of the Continental Army during the Battle of Saratoga.
Arnold sent a letter to the British commander through a Loyalist shopkeeper in Philadelphia to Sir Henry Clinton. Clinton used John Andre his adjutant general to deal with Arnold and his demands. By 1780 Clinton agreed to a payment of 20,000 pounds for for the capture of West Point and 3,000 troops. The plot was discovered when Andre carrying papers by Arnold was seized on Sept. 23, 1780 by the NY militia near Terrytown when he was returning from a meeting with Arnold. Arnold fled to Clinton in NYC and he never got a command or the money he asked for from the British. He was not trusted by anyone.

The Green Mountain Boys and Benedict Arnold's troops captured Fort Ticonderoga.
There are many people in history named Benedict like the Benedict eggs, bit if you are talking about Benedict Arnold. His greatest achievement was probably his major victory at Saratoga even though he was not the leading General he rallied the troops. He brought their spirits they would of lost many battles without Benedict Arnold. He did die a traitor, but he sent a message to the world that you can start a couple of farmers with guns but we ended a world superpower.

Arnold defied Gates' orders and led the troops on his own initiative.
General Horatio Howe (Gates) got the credit, but it was really Benedict Arnold. Before his defection to the British, Arnold was a courageous and skilled commander. A sad turnabout. Since he deserted, his monuments have been stripped and public praise stifled, but during the month-long campaign that is referred to as The Battle of Saratoga, he twice won decisive battles, once by cunning and once by conspicuous bravery. The second time, at the battle of Bemis Heights, during a charge so heroic it was practically suicidal, his horse was shot out from under him, crushing his leg. During that battle his troops killed five times the number of Burgoyne's troops than he lost.It was probably the feud with Howe that ultimately caused him to defect. Arnold was too proud, too unforgiving, too arrogant to stay in the chain of command with a general he thought inferior to himself. One note: The Battle of Saratoga was commemorated with a Day of Thanksgiving, Dec. 18, 1777, the first holiday thus named.
