One suggestion would be to check the "throttle position sensor". Basicly this is nothing more that a variable resistor. I would recommend possibly purchasing a Chilton's Manual, available from most auto parts stores, excellent troubleshooting steps/ideas.
I had this problem on a 93 tbird, i had to replace the odometer gear, so while I had the gauge cluster out I removed the bulb from the check engine light. Not recommended, but i figure the dumby codes flash up more often than something serious, and If something obvious happens you will notice. I had an 02 sensor go bad, noticed the rough idle. You can still pull the codes anyways.

This car may need the battery in the system to complete all circuits. Are you trying to test your alternator?
