The second gear clutch is worn out and the metal to metal contact is causing a rough shift
If this is correct the transmission is going to die soon.
Your power steering pump is likely defective.
replace power control solenoid. $50 part
One issue with a 2001 Chevy Impala hard shifting could be the pressure control solenoid. The car may also need something as simple as more transmission fluid.
try changing the map sensor, that was the problem on mine.
a broken dip stick wont cause hard shifting... the engine does not do the any shifting... your problem would be the transmission... check transmission....
Most likely pressure control solenoid in transmission....Easily tested with proper scan tool ALSO try changing EGR valve. Will REALLY HELP!!!! I just changed mine, all my hard shifting and jerking in reverse went away.

Yes its not to hard. It takes a couple metric wrenches and a screwdriver. Slide under the rear of the car and the filter is right behind the fuel tank.
U might need new brakes.. did your brake light come on?
