I would suspect the left bank plug wires are reversed. First, adjust the valves and run a compression test. If the valves haven't been adjusted in a while you MAY have burned an exhaust valve. What' you're describing is a classic indicator of a valve that's either burned or not seated.

Next, check the points and timing, then make sure the distributor cap is in good condition. If you see any carbon traces inside, don't mess with it, just replace the cap.

I wouldn't drive it until you've solved the problem.

Good luck. Before you do any of this, do me a favor and look at the cast iron thing on the muffler the left-side tailpipe is sticking out of. Is there a hole--a THREADED hole that was obviously put there on purpose--in that casting? If so, someone installed a muffler from a 1974 Beetle on your car. In 1974, VW started using exhaust gas recirculation on its cars, and pulling the exhaust from the left side muffler. The fix is to buy a new muffler.

What if your 73 vw beetle back fires from left muffler but right muffler runs fine any idea why or what you can do to correct this?

Is the engine cold? Good. Go outside and crawl under the back of your car, and look at your muffler. It's bolted to the heater boxes through these cast-iron things on either side of it, right? In 1974, the US government mandated that all cars have Exhaust Gas Recirculation systems to cut down on pollution--a port in the exhaust system somewhere fed some of the exhaust into a can that cooled it down and ran it back into the engine to be reburned. Your 1973 car never had this can. What I figure happened is someone put a 1974 muffler on your car. The EGR port is on the left side, in the cast-iron thing I described earlier. It's just a threaded hole, and it's what's causing your car to backfire. Corrective action: change to a muffler for a pre-1973 car. Also check to see if the muffler clamps on the heater boxes to the muffler or to the head are tight. If there is any black soot at the couplings you may need to either tighten or replace the gaskets. If there is an exhaust leak it will let air get in and lean out the hot exhaust mixture and it could back fire then also.

Where is the oil pump located on a 72 super beetle?

Wait till your car cools off, crawl under and look at the engine right behind the muffler. You'll see a squarish steel plate with four bolts sticking out of it right below the crank pulley. That's the oil pump cover.

Will removing the muffler on a diesel engine cause problems?

yes because the fumes will polute the air more. Wrong The correct answer is below. The Muffler controls the volume of sound or the tone or pitch of the exhaust leaving the engine. The Catalytic Converter removes harmfull particles and gases. This is auto pollutions control 101. Removing the muffler can increase horse power and might decrease backflow pressure which influences the torgue of the engine. Some vehicles need more back pressure or less back pressure to influence torque. The factory usually uses the muffler for ascetic reasons low volume or a correct tone/pitch to a vehicle so it will have the "right sound". But removing the muffler can mean a freer flowing exhaust; which can help some vehicles especially diesels lower their exhaust gas temperatures which can make the engine remain cooler during towing situations.
