The crank and cam sensors replace the old distributor to tell the computer when to fire the correct spark plug. The failure of either one would not prevent the engine from cranking, but would stop it from starting.

shaft sensor is called the crankshaft angle sensor and is located where the distribuor would normally go, which is on the passenger front side of the engine. The sensor is the black part on top that is attached by two screws. You can remove that portion safely as long as you do not turn the other part of the mechanism at all or turn the engine over or you will have to really know what you are doing to get it synched back up at the risk of damaging the engine.
