Replacing a fuel pump is either costly or time-consuming if you do-it-yourself.

This is because the entire gas tank has to be removed from the vehicle.

UPDATE: Following the model of another Taurus owner and his how-to guide, I cut a hole in the floor above the fuel pump and did the replacement from inside.

Heartily recommend this approach!

The pump itself prices in the $125-200 range.

Note: I have had very very good luck with used pumps - my last one was only $25

Note 2: be sure to double-check that the fuel shutoff / inertia switch has NOT been tripped
