Is it at the correct fill level ? If the radiator is old it is possible some corrosion has blocked up soemwhere and the radiator may need anther draining and flush through with water till it clears out.

If your husband poured barsleak in the crankcase, it probably stopped up the oil pickup screen. It is supposed to be poured in the radiator. The engine is probably ruined if you have driven it with the oil light on.

Nothing is cheap today . If you are handy , the process takes only 15 minutes but you need to be carefull when tightening the bolts evenly to avoid cracking the housing. When the thermostat is out , you can conduct a pretty good coolant flush at the same time. The thermostat would cost you under $30. and one gallon of antifreeze would be under $15. If they flushed the system , refilled with new coolant, I would say the $160 was a fair price. If you attempt it yourself and damage the housing, the $160 would seem like a bargain.
