The number 16.9 cm seems a little too precise to be correct. Along the center of the body, the liver is normally about 4-8 cm long. Just under the right nipple, the liver is normally about 6-12 cm long. In taller people, the liver may be slightly larger; in shorter people it may be slightly smaller. Only a doctor can determine whether there should be concern over liver size--and that will involve ruling out the common conditions that can produce an enlarged liver, like heart failure. A doctor can measure the size of your liver using either percussion, a scratch test, or imaging. Using percussion, a doctor will place one knuckle on your chest or belly and tap the knuckle with the other hand. By listening closely s/he can determine where the liver edges lie. Using a scratch test, the doctor will place a stethoscope over your liver and scratch your belly and chest. S/he can determine where the liver edges lie because the scratching sounds different over the liver than anywhere else. Imaging is the most definite test but also very expensive. Everything is painless, but the scratch test tickles.
