Consider something that tastes bad to them but is pleasant to you, like a fragrance spray that wont harm them if swallowed. There is something called Kennel Guard that smells like lemons and citrus to us, but it tastes nasty to dogs. Also, go to the local pet store and try to find something to make them want their toys more than the carpet. Shampoo the carpet to get out anything that he might want.
