Grief is normal when you have lost a loved one, so being sad is how he should feel for awhile after your mom dies. If your dad is having trouble doing normal everyday things, though, he is probably depressed and should see a psychiatrist for medication to help him feel more like his old self again.
You can help by doing part of the chores and helping him around the house, by doing your schoolwork without having to be asked, and just doing your part to keep things going. Lots of hugs and telling him you love him also help!
