Hey, I also had a 1988 firebird and i had the same problem... I replaced a part called the oil pressure sensor and it worked. Hopefully this helps out.. Just dont blow ur trans.. like i did. Good luck
Some of these models had problems with the switch itself; You may want to replace it.
Check the connection on the oil pressure switch. If the connection is solid I would just go ahead and replace the oil pressure switch. They only cost on an average 7 to 13 dollars. Hope this helps.
I had a similar problem w/ a 2000 Regal. The ignition switch has a circuit that is shared with the turn signals (draw up to 9A) and also controls the ignition relay. That circuit had a bad contact in the switch. I work in electronics & I worked @ this for quite a while. Had the ignition switch changed out (about $60 for switch + labor) . You still use the same lock so no change of key is required. Changed out over 3 yrs. ago & no issues since.
If it is anything like the 2000, then as you look at the engine from the front, it is on the right side of the engine near the top. There is no other switch above it and it is a simple clip that slides to the side and allows the switch to be pulled out. I changed mine and the gauge in the cockpit worked and the fans came on. Good luck.
Download JTablet. It worked for me.

Same thing happened to me. I moved the switch that determines KGs or pounds back and forth a couple of times and it worked fine...
