It depends on why your menstrual cycles are irregular to begin with.

When we talk about irregular cycles we're talking about weeks or months difference from one cycle to the next - up to a weeks variation from your average cycle is normal - and when your menstrual cycle is irregular like that there's a reason that should be investigated and treated by your doctor.

You can help regulate your cycles by staying healthy: eat a healthy balanced diet, exercise regularly, sleep well, avoid stress, maintain healthy weight - it also helps to take daily multi-vitamins and a herbal treatment like chaste tree to help regulate hormones, lunaception can also help.

Hormonal Birth Control DOES NOT regulate menstruation, it actually does completely the opposite - it works by stopping your menstrual cycle so that you don't ovulate, and thus you don't menstruate - the bleeding women experience on hormonal birth control is a withdrawal bleed controlled by the birth control. This will just temporarily cover-up the problem, and can make it worse when you stop.

Everyone has a different menstrual cycle and there is no real way to make your cycle more regular. However, if you once had a regular one and it began to shift up, it could be due to stress , lack of sleep or improper dieting. I have heard that the birth control pill helps keep your period more regular and expected but of course this doesn't help you get pregnant, and your periods may revert to irregularity when you stop.

I'm no doctor but really you can't make your period regular. All periods are different for all girls. Some girls cramp, some don't, some girls have irregular periods, some don't. Your period is your period and trying to change it probably wont do much.

You need to determine why your periods are irregular.

If you're in your teens irregular cycles are normal - you only have regular periods when you are ovulating regularly but it takes time for your body to reach a point where it is mature enough to do this, and while developing your hormones can be thrown off balance so cause irregular cycles. You don't need to do anything about this, your cycles will naturally regulate as you develop.

When we talk of irregular cycles we're talking about weeks or months difference from one cycle to the next - menstrual cycles are different lengths and there can be a few days variation from one cycle to the next, but if your cycles are actually irregular there's little or no pattern at all. You would need to see your doctor to find out what is going wrong with your cycles and look at treatment.

In the mean time you can learn Fertility Awareness Method which can help you determine when your periods are going to start and what may be causing your cycles to be irregular. Make sure to stay healthy: eat a healthy balanced diet, maintain healthy weight, exercise, sleep well, and avoid stress. You can also help with daily multivitamins, herbal treatments like chaste tree, and lunaception.

Hormonal birth control does not regulate menstruation.

This is a myth that people really need to stop.

Hormonal birth control works by stopping the menstrual cycle in order to prevent ovulation, and as you no longer ovulate you also no longer menstruate. The bleeding women experience on hormonal birth control such as the combination pill is a withdrawal bleed caused by the drop in hormones when going from active to inactive pills - it mimics menstruation but it is not the same thing.

You can't speed-up your period, there's also very little reason to as there's nothing you can't do on your period. When you menstruate is determined by your menstrual cycle, you cannot speed-up your menstrual cycle or skip phases of your menstrual cycle to start menstruating earlier. Once your period has started it will take however long it takes for it to come to an end.

When do you get your period when you get no placebo pills?

Depends on your natural cycle. The first three months, you may have irregular spotting/ bleeding, but it should regulate after about 12-14 weeks. If you naturally have a pretty regular cycle, then you should get your period every 28-30 days or so. If not, unfortunately, it can be very unpredictable. Estrogen pills with placebo (sugar) pills, help to regulate the menstrual cycle. Progesterone-only, on the other hand, will not regulate your period. There are several websites and apps that can help you track your cycle, so maybe participating in period-tracking can help you predict when your next period will begin.
