The 1099 misc is the basic operating procedure for industries such as entertainment, high finance, and self-employment. However, the main reason that the 1099 misc form is not counted in many employment roles is that it is simply too difficult to keep up with those people who use this as their main form of earning a living.
If you were to ask people at the top of the economic spectrum, they would say that the W-2 is a farce. The W-2 represents "at will" employment, which gives less security, actually, than the employment that the people at the top have, which more closely resembles a 1099 misc form of employment.
The type of employment that a W-2 form represents is long gone with the golden era of the New Deal, as people must return to a much more capitalistic form of employment.
