For someone who loves art but doesn’t feel able to make a living as a painter or sculptor, becoming an art framer may be a good fit. An art framer builds custom frames for customers’ works of art. They also build frames for unconventional art, such as shadow boxes to house collections. Some frames may be simple, but others may be works of art in themselves.

An art framer generally learns on the job from a senior art framer. Many art framers have degrees in art, but a degree isn’t required. A job as an art framer can be a good choice for a recently graduated art student who isn’t able to support himself from his art yet--but he may find he prefers the steady, and sometimes artistic work, art framing provides.

An art framer’s day consists of a lot of standing, as most of the work needs to be done that way. He spends a lot of time interacting with people, as customers bring in art to be framed and the art framer needs to find out exactly what kind of frame the customer wants. He must have a feel for art, whether or not he considers himself an artist, as he’ll need to be able to suggest frame types that will best match a customer’s piece of art. An art framer works with several tools to cut mats, cut frames and put them all together, so he must have steady hands. If he opens his own framing shop, he’ll also need a sense for business and accounting.

Beginning art framers in someone else’s shop make about the same salary as most retail workers, around $9 an hour. It may be a bit higher, since framing is a specialty job. As his skills increase, his salary will, too. If a framer opens his own shop, he has the opportunity to make significantly more money, though it may be sporadic as some months will be busier than others.

Someone with an artistic eye and good carpentry skills may find a lot of satisfaction in a job as an art framer, as it allows for a combination of artistic flights of fancy and practical, sturdy work with his hands.
