American Intercontinental University (AIU) is a multi-campus international institute of higher learning that offers both online and classroom instruction. AIU was founded in Europe in 1970, and currently has campuses in Atlanta, Houston, South Florida, Los Angeles and London. There is also an online component, designed for the busy professional, which was established in 2001. History

American Intercontinental University (AIU) started in Switzerland in 1970 as a school specializing in fashion design. AIU formed a campus in London in 1978. Today, AIU has campuses throughout the U.S., including Atlanta, Georgia, Los Angeles, California, and Houston, Texas. The online university was started in 2001 and offers education to students from all over the world.

Curriculum

One of the popular programs offered by AIU is the Study-Abroad Program which is similar to a foreign exchange student program. A student has the opportunity to study such subjects as fashion marketing or design in a particular city such as Paris or London. Today, online universities are more popular than ever and AIU is no exception. Associate as well as Bachelor and Master’s Degrees are offered in business administration, criminal justice, education, and information technology. In addition, media graphics programs are available at AIU Online.

Virtual Campus

Students who attend AIU Online have access to virtual classrooms and are able to ask questions real time. The teacher communicates with the students by entering a chat area on the computer screen and/or talks. Students listen through their computer’s sound system. Each subject has a series of lectures and at least one group project. Students communicate with each other through chat in order to coordinate each portion of the group project. AIU Online also has library resources and guides to help in writing assignments.

Who Attends AIU?

AIU has over 24,000 students world-wide and at least 80% of those attend AIU Online. AIU’s students include a diverse group which is comprised of people in the military, the disabled, and stay-at-home moms. In addition, in a 2007 Atlanta, Georgia report by “Diverse Issues in Higher Education,” AIU was second in awarding associate degrees to minorities and among the top universities to award Bachelor and Master’s degrees to minorities.
