When do you recommend people drink protein drinks and where can readers find FitPro?

The protein is in its natural state unchanged with 20% whey and 80% casein - that's why it's great before a workout, in between meals, as a meal, or at night before bed, because casein takes 4 to 6 hours to digest so you're not hungry. I don't go a day without it. You can find FitPro at FitPro - Real Milk Protein.

In 1991, you were set to compete in the Olympics as the boxing team's captain when you were hit by a reckless driver and told you would never walk again. How did you manage to come back from your injuries bigger, better, and stronger than ever?

The accident was devastating, I had worked so hard to get to where I was for it to be all pulled out from under me. But once a fighter, always a fighter. There was no way I was going to quit just because my doctor said so. My strong faith in God, my wonderful supportive family and friends, and my work ethic combined made for a comeback formula. I refused to accept that that was my destiny. Instead, I used my accident to push myself and to show others what you can do when you put your mind to something. Nothing is impossible if you just try. There is no failure in trying, the failure would have been if I had accepted the doctor's diagnosis and never tried. I worked my tail off every day in therapy, wearing out my therapists knowing that I one day would walk and compete again. It all started with a first step, and I can do all things through Jesus Christ who strengthens me (Phil 4:13).

How would you advise other to attack their "get in shape" New Year's resolutions?

How many times are you going to say: "This is going to be the year when I make a change"? Get it done already! Every year that goes by is a year of good health wasted - and it's shortening your life span. Be the envy of your friends by being the one to actually do it.

So, I notice a trend at the gym every January. The gym is jam-packed with newcomers trying to fulfill their New Year's resolutions and about 2-3 weeks later, you never see them again. What would you tell those people who abandon their resolutions that might motivate them to stick it out longer?

Rome wasn't built overnight - neither is a fit body. You spent all those years destroying it, now give yourself time to get that fit body back. When you start seeing the results of your labor, it will be your greatest motivator and you will want more. Fall in love with yourself enough to give yourself a healthy body. I promise: Everything else around you will improve when you do.

True or False: Doing the same workout routine every day (e.g. running on a treadmill with no variety) will cause burnout?

Changing up the workout is good in many ways, not just for the fear of burnout but also because it reduces the risk of you getting bored. The body will stop seeing significant results from doing the same workout routine over and over after a few weeks. Changing your workout routine will stimulate other muscles to increase your metabolism and to burn fat faster.

What's your opinion on bandwagon workouts like CrossFit? Do you think they're just a fad or do you believe in their effectiveness?

Though I believe in some of the Cross Fit exercises, I don't believe in all of them. The way some of them are performed will cause long term joint problems. For example, in my book, the most effective fat burning lean muscle building and overall conditioning workouts are interval training.

You were a professional boxer before you transitioned to personal training. Do you incorporate boxing into your training workouts?

I incorporate boxing training depending on the client's needs or goals. Many of my clients come to me for a particular TV or movie role, so I have to gear the training towards that. I'm like the Picasso of training: Making you the picture you wish to be. However, I always try to put boxing into workouts whenever I can. It's a great interval full body lean muscle mass workout which gives you great skills that you may or may not need one day. Even if you won't need them, it's nice to know that you have them and it builds confidence.

What is your favorite memory from professional boxing?

I have so many great memories of the sport that I love and taught me so much in life, but one of the things that I will always hold dear to my heart is the time I got to spend with my grandfather, Dan Marra, who introduced me to the sport. He was a boxer himself, as well as my first trainer, and we spent countless of hours together. While spending time together, he taught me everything he knew. He shared his experiences and we watched fights on the TV. I couldn't wait for Saturday afternoon and Wide World of Sports to come on to watch the fights with grandpa J. My second favorite memory from my boxing time would be the day I became the world champion and the belt was strapped around me.

Just a few years after you got hit, you won the Super-Middleweight Champion title. WHAT?! That's incredible! What mindset did you have to put yourself in to make the extraordinary comeback that you did and win the title?

After I worked my way back and got into the ring again, it was like someone opened up the flood gates. I just became more and more hungry to be the best. I trained harder than I had ever done before. Even though this time around I was still dealing with pains and some injuries that should have held me back, I wouldn't let them. I started talking myself out of being in pain and eating it like candy instead by keep telling myself I had not come that far to stop now. My eyes were set on being the best and being the champion. If a taxi at 40 miles a hour couldn't stop me, how could I let the guy in front of me do it? I adopted a no-backing-out attitude, and combining work ethic along with a never-get-tired mentality at the end of a bunch of heavy handed punching - the title was mine. ;)

What types of people drink FitPro? Men, women, etc?

It doesn't matter if you're a superstar athlete, someone who just likes to stay fit, young or old, or a stay-at-home mom - FitPro is a great source of daily nutrition for everyone. My mom loves it and uses it not only as shakes but in cooking and baking recipes as well.

How does it feel to hold that title?

Becoming the Super-Middleweight Champion was an amazing feeling as it showed that all my hard work paid off. Defying the odds made me stronger in so many different ways in my life. Knowing you are the best at what you do and that the road to get there wasn't paved for you but filled with a detour most cannot relate to, made earning the title even more gratifying. The fact that I was able to inspire so many people and touch so many lives along my journey, and help them go after their dreams or change makes everything that I went through worth it and I wouldn't change a thing about my path.

Who was the toughest opponent you ever faced?

Brian Kearny, a tough Irish kid with a great punch who was one of the best, and Adam Garland from USA - a great boxer who had very well rounded skills and was hard to hit.

Okay, so now you're a celebrity trainer, it sounds like you pretty much have the best job ever. What do you enjoy most about your job?

I love what I do now - transforming people's bodies, bettering their fitness, building their confidence levels, and getting them to their goals. It is very gratifying for me to watch my clients do things that they never thought they could do, and to see how life changing it is for the ones who have lost lots of weight. I love being a part of helping people, being able to use my skills and motivation to push people to their limits. I feel it's a blessing. Watching my celebs and their hard work play out on screen, TV, runways, magazines, or in the sports they play is a great feeling.

You actually WROTE the book on training - literally. You formulated and composed the Boxing Specialty Course Manual used by the National Academy of Sports Medicine to certify all boxing trainers. What was your process for writing the manual?

I saw so many trainers training their clients using boxing in their sessions and teaching it wrong. It bothered me to watch, so I decided to write a simple course to teach trainers the proper way to use it with their clients. A step by step approach to boxing drills, basic foot work, hand wrapping, punching technique, punch combinations, and the actual teaching technique so it doesn't get too confusing. Why not at the same time as you're putting your client through a calorie burning workout, also teach them the proper skills, I thought, so I approached NASM with the idea. I said to them "if yoga instructors, aerobic class instructors, etc. need to be certified, why should not someone who's teaching boxing or boxing classes be as well," and they agreed.

Tell us more about FitPro Protein! What separates the product from everything else available on the market, and how did you get involved?

I came across FitPro Protein at the annual IHRSA Fitness Convention 2 years ago, which I attend every year to learn new things and check out the latest and greatest new products, and I became a fan of the product and its founder, Mr. Brad Kloss. After using it and seeing great results on myself, I turned my clients on to it and they also started to see great results. I then reached out to Brad to discuss how I could represent FitPro as its trainer spokesperson. We hit it off as two people who want to bring the best quality protein to people as possible. We both have a passion for helping people with fitness and nutrition. Brad is very knowledgeable on every level of what it takes to formulate the best nutritional products on the planet, and he is also a great business man, a gracious family man and a gentleman. I am proud to be a part of the FitPro team and to send out its message as the only natural based high protein low carb ready to drink protein on the market.

Alright, so we're all guilty of overindulging over the holidays -- but now that the holidays are officially over, what are some of the best ways to shed those unwanted lbs?

Time to put the holiday cheer down, cut those alcohol calories out of your diet, and back away from the desserts. Let's get back to eating clean with a high protein diet starting with FitPro Protein to help build your muscle while burning fat and giving your body all the best nutrition it needs to build a healthy body. FitPro is lactose free, gluten free, and has no added hormones - hands down it's the best protein on the planet. Let's cut the carbs and sugars and start drinking the proper amount of water to release those fat burning cells. I recommend Essentia water to stay properly hydrated while you start grinding out the intervals in the gym.
