Why should Answers users check you out on My Man is a Loser this summer?
My Man is a Loser is a great date movie to watch with your hubby or your girlfriends to just sit back and laugh. And hopefully answers users will laugh at what I do and like my work and want to see more of Kathy Searle...so if there's anyone out there that needs a quirky redheaded actress I'm available!
How does Lianne react when she finds out her husband is taking advice from a playboy?
Technically I didn't know that Marty was going to Mike for advice. But in the end I'm really grateful that he did :) because Marty turns around and becomes the husband I knew he could be... The man I fell in love with, the man I married.
For how long have Lianne and Marty been married in the beginning of the movie, and when do they begin experiencing relationship troubles?
The back-story that I created was that Marty and Lianne had been married for about 10 years and it's been the past couple of years we've been struggling since his business took more of him away from me and I then became lower on his list of what mattered.
Why is Lianne unhappy with her marriage?
Lianne doesn't feel like a priority. All Marty is focused on is working and making money...which makes me then fill the void by working out since our sex life is almost nonexistent. While Marty might think I'm working out to get the "attention of other men"... I really just want him to notice me again!
What was it like working so closely with Michael Rapaport?
I have been such a fan of Michael's work for years now. So I was thrilled and totally nervous to work with him!!! His body of work is amazing and I wanted to be able to step up to the plate and be on his level! When I first met him at our cast dinner before we started shooting, I knew we were going to have an amazing time together... He was so funny, down-to-earth, and no ego!!! I also learned a lot from him on set! He's so detailed with his work! I hope I get to work with him again!!!
What are some of the small things you do to portray an authentic relationship on screen?
I'm a true believer that art imitates life and life imitates art. I always try to draw on my own life experiences and bring them into every character that I am fortunate enough to play. Why I love film and TV so much is that the camera catches everything... So you can't lie!! I just try to be as real as I possibly can be... While yes I am playing "Lianne" there will always be Kathy Searle in the role.
My Man is a Loser was written and directed by comedian Mike Young. It's his first big project like this. What was it like working with him?
Mike Young is amazing!!! Mike is a standup comic as well, so this man knows and understands comedy and the art of comedic timing. What was so awesome about working with him was that he trusted all of his actors... He gave us the freedom to play! The environment on set was that of fun, yes we were there to work... But the director and producers really made it a comfortable and safe environment for the actors... So every day it was a joy to be there! And you really felt that from everyone not just the actors but the crew too! It was one of my favorite sets to be on :)
How will married couples - even ones in gratifying relationships - relate to My Man Is a Loser?
I think people will see that we all make mistakes, and relationships take work. But if you really love someone... You make them feel that way every day no matter what! And the recipe to a good relationship are the little things! Be grateful, show up and be truthful with one another.
Do you believe what Clarissa (played by Tika Sumpter) says about Marty "marrying up"? Do you believe that in every relationship, someone settles?
I hope not... I'm a hopeless romantic! I would say to anyone out there don't settle... I believe everybody has "a person." They might be just around the corner....and we will know when we meet them.
How well did John Stamos pull off the playboy, Mike, who helps two friends save their marriages?
John was amazing... He's so genuine and truthful in this role. John is so much fun to watch onscreen he's charming, sexy, funny...so he works being the love "guru". And he's very easy on the eyes :)
Lianne tells her best friend and fellow married woman Liz (played by Heidi Armbruster) everything. Who's your real-life Liz?
My mom is actually my real life Liz in many ways! She and I really are best friends! And I can tell her everything. Well almost anything!!
My Man is a Loser hits theaters and digital distribution this Friday, July 25. What has the promotion process been like?
It's been so much fun... doing press for a movie is fairly new to me, but everyone has been so nice and gracious. I love the fact that people want to get to know me as a person and an actor and learn about this genuinely funny movie that I am so happy I got to be a part of!
You've done a variety of voiceover work. How is it different to act on camera versus voice work?
I think the main difference is that you're acting in front of a microphone... And people can't see you. So you have to make people "see and feel" through your voice.
If you could remake and star in any romantic comedy, which would it be, and who would you cast opposite you?
This is such a tough question...because I love so many romantic comedies! I loved the movie Seems Like Old Times starring Goldie Hawn and Chevy Chase!! I would love to play that role with Chris Pratt playing Chevy Chase's character :) And of course I would love to any John Hughes movie starring me and Zac Efron or Zach Braff...I love me some Zachs! So cute!!! I became an actor because of romantic comedies... I love the idea of the nerdy guy or the quirky girl getting the one that they wanted in the end!
What movies and TV shows are on your summer must-watch list?
TV shows...Married and You're The Worst on FX. Of course Project Runway and The Real Housewives!! Films...I loved Boyhood, such an awesome movie and Begin Again...another beautiful romantic film!
You've been in a dozens of television commercials. How did you get into that industry and succeed?
I really feel like commercials are 22-30 second Sitcom's nowadays! Sometimes the commercials are funnier than the shows!! Hahahaha :) I started doing commercial work when I was 12 years old and after being scouted by a children's manager when I was in middle school... I have been doing them ever since! I love them!
What was your first commercial like?
The first commercial I shot was for Seamans furniture... I was the daughter in a family and we were scrunched together on an uncomfortable couch until we finally went to Seamans and got the right fit :) I remember having so much fun that day... And we discovered that I still have that sweater that I wore when I was 12 years old from that shoot!!!!
Which commercial was the most fun to film?
Because I've been so fortunate with commercial work... This is a tough one to answer too!!! But I loved working on a spot for Embassy suites! Jim Jenkins was the director of that and I learned so much about the art of comedy from him! I also loved working on a commercial for straight talk wireless... I still laugh when I see that commercial!! I'm so bitchy in it. It's so funny to see... Because that's so not my personality... But the spot itself is hilarious and edited so beautifully! Love it :) The most fun was shooting a spot for Kohl's... They flew us to Cape Town South Africa!!!! That was an amazing experience! As actors we are so blessed that we can see the world because of jobs that take us to awesome places!!
You teach acting workshops as well. What sort of things do you teach?
By telling actors the mistakes I made...hopefully they won't make the same! I'm all about people realizing their true selves... Showing actors that we are one-of-a-kind, to not be what we think the business wants us to be...I spent so many years trying that, and as soon as I started to embrace who I really was, I started booking work! I often do workshops with kids for commercial and improv training! I think it's important for us to always be on our toes and expect the unexpected... It's why improv training is so important.
Do you have any upcoming projects you'd like to tell us about?
I shot an awesome pilot this season called Freak Me it was funded by Kickstarter and written by an amazing actor/writer Guy Oliveri. He wrote these roles for myself and five other actor friends... including Mindy Cohn! It was such a great experience and it's so funny! I'm hoping that someone will buy it... they are shopping it around now :)
In the upcoming film My Man Is a Loser, you play Lianne, the wife of Marty (played by Michael Rapaport). Can you give us an introduction to the film?
My Man is a Loser is not your typical ROM-COM, while yes it is a movie about relationships, it's not a chick flick. It's a story about two husbands who want to better their marriages and look to their single friend for help. What I love about this movie is it's about how important friendships are, how we can learn to better ourselves from those around us :)
