The city of Arlington, Virginia is across the Potomac River from Washington, D.C. Tourists who stay in Arlington can easily travel into Washington for sightseeing using the area's subway system. This subway system, known as the Metro, has stations within walking distance of several hotels in Arlington. Travelers can take the Metro to Arlington from Reagan National Airport and from the Amtrak station at Union Station in Washington.

Some tourist destinations are located in the city of Arlington. The Pentagon is in Arlington. Guided tours are available if they are scheduled in advance. Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington has over 330, 000 graves. Veterans have been buried there since 1864. The cemetery is also the final resting place for President John F. Kennedy, President William Taft, some explorers and some astronauts. The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at the cemetery is guarded 24 hours a day all year long. Visitors can view the Changing of the Guard at this tomb. Arlington House, the former home of Robert E. Lee, is located in the cemetery. It is now a museum.

The Iwo Jima Memorial is near Arlington Cemetery. This memorial honors Marines who have died while fighting for the country since 1775. The Netherlands Carillon borders the cemetery and is adjacent to the Iwo Jima Memorial. The carillon has bells which play every day. Concerts are given from May through September by carillonneurs. Visitors are welcome to climb the tower during concerts to watch the carillonneurs play. The tower is surrounded by tulips.

Arlington has miles of bike trails and multi-use trails for visitors who are interested in outdoor exercise. Visitors who are staying in the Rosslyn area of Arlington can combine exercise, shopping, and dining by walking across the Key Bridge to the Georgetown area of Washington, D.C. There are many shops and restaurants in this area. There are shopping malls and restaurants in Arlington at The Fashion Centre at Pentagon City and Ballston Common Mall. Both of these malls are very close to Metro stops. Other stores and restaurants are located throughout the city.

Visitors to the Washington, D.C. area who stay in Arlington can take advantage of the activities available in Arlington or easily travel to Washington for sightseeing.
