Australia is well known for continental uniqueness, and there are few topographical wonders like Ayers Rock. Standing over 1100 feet tall, it dominates the landscape for miles around. Ayers Rock, the English name taken after the late 19th Century Australia Chief Secretary Sir Henry Ayers, sits near the center of the continent and is the centerpiece for indigenous life in the region.
The most striking feature of Ayers Rock is not so much its monolithic stature as much as the fact that it takes on a red glow during the sunset hours, which are peak tourist times. It is a centerpiece of the Northern Territory Uluru-Kata Kjuta National Park system. It is classified as an inselberg, or island mountain, and is composed primarily of arkose sandstone, which produces the red tint. In the few instances of rain, it takes on a silvery-gray cast. The cracks and fissures appear to be darkened mini-waterfalls.
Uluru/Ayers Rock is located over 200 miles from the nearest town of Alice Springs, but is still a very popular tourist destination.

Nobody "runs" Uluru-Ayers Rock, but it is protected and managed by the Anangu people, who are regarded as the traditional owners. The "ownership" of Uluru was returned to the Anangu in 1985, along with KataTjuta, formerly The Olgas. The National Park is now co-managed by a board made up of Anangu and Piranpa members, with their roles and responsibilities set out in both the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act) and the Aboriginal Land Rights Act (NT) 1976.
