About 30%-40% of all Golf shots hit during a typical round of golf are putts. Therefore, it makes sense that if you can reduce the number of overall putts it takes you to complete 18 holes; you will be able to lower your score and your handicap. The only way to become a better is to hit the practice putting greens.

Before every round of play you should spend at least 15 minutes on the practice green hitting putts. This is not necessarily going to help you sink more birdies during your round, but it will give you a good idea of the speed of the greens for that particular golf course. You also will loosen up enough so that when it comes time to putt on the first green, you will not feel nervous and miss a short four-footer.

While hitting a few putts before you play a round is good, you really can get the most benefit by devoting an hour or more every day to just practicing and honing your skills on the practice green. You should develop a plan to make the time you spend on the practice green as productive as possible.

Part of that plan should include keeping track of the things you already do well and the things that need improvement. If, for example, you "never" miss a putt less than four feet in distance, you can concentrate on longer putts. If you have trouble reading the break of the green, focus attention on putts that break to the left or right.

Develop some simple drills to practice the different elements of the putting game. You could take some string and make a five foot circle around a hole and then try to putt 10 straight balls so they either drop in the hole or stay within the circle. This will teach you both directional putting and also how to judge the speed with which you should hit the golf ball.

It might take a few weeks of steady practice before you start to notice a marked improvement in your putting. Have some patience and you will soon start to sink putts at a more frequent rate. You will begin to take strokes off your game and soon you will have a handicap you will be proud to own.

How do you become a better putter?

Practice. Find a grip that you like, and seem to make a lot of putts with. Practice a square to square stroke, and develop a good rythym. Try putting a coain on the back of the putter and try and make putts without it falling off. You will need to work on your pace, as well as your lines, and also try to learn how to read greens better.

Difference between a unisex putter and male putter?

as long as a putter has the right length of shaft for your body and you like putting with it, there is no difference; and if there is a difference still choose the one you putt best with no matter how it is labeled or what color it is. I don't think there are putters made just for men, a woman could like using any putter a man uses and vice verse.

Why is the golf putter known as the Texas wedge?

It is simply a slang term that was popularised by Ben Hogan. Golf courses in Texas used to have a reputation for very hard and crispy fairways and fringes, so if a player was just off the green they would favour their putter over a wedge.
