Many people may think that becoming a mental health therapist requires you to receive a PhD. And while this is sometimes true, many times you can actually become one by going to college for just a few years. And being a therapist is a richly rewarding career. Your typical day will consist of listening to your patients problems and advising them on how to deal with these problems. Depending on the type of therapist you would like to become, you can work as a marriage counselor, pediatric therapist, or even a therapist that deals with the mentally ill. Therapists can open their own business while some work for the government or in a hospital setting.

Before going to college to become a therapist, you first have to write down your goals. Certain therapists require less schooling than others. You may want to become a drug rehabilitation therapist or you might want to work in an elementary school as one. In general, someone who wants to become licensed as a professional therapist will have to attend college for two or three years. You will need to receive sixty credits in order to graduate, and you should take courses in psychology and social work. You will also have to sit for a national board examination in order to become licensed.

Depending on where you work, your salary may differ greatly. Therapists who work with alcohol and drug abusers can earn up to $50,000 a year. If you work in a school or college setting, you will probably come home with about $75,000 a year. Marriage counselors and therapists can earn about $40,000 every year. If you decide to open your own business, you will probably find that you do not make that much in the beginning. Establishing a good set of clientele will allow you to grow your business. You may even want to begin a partnership if you feel that you might struggle in the beginning.

Therapists encourage many people to have a brighter outlook on their lives. It takes a certain amount of compassion and understanding to be a therapist since many people will come to you with their personal problems. Some patients may even ask for your advice. If you are a good listener and have a knack for offering good, solid advice, this career field may be for you.
