Anyone who wants to expand a wireless home network can do so with a bridge. Most wireless routers have four Ethernet ports, so this limits the amount of devices which could be connected through cables.

A network bridge is a networking accessory which has Ethernet ports for compatible devices. The bridge can be connected to an existing router through Ethernet cables or wireless methods. The bottom line is that a network bridge ultimately links additional Ethernet ready devices to a router that can only physically support four Ethernet connections. A network bridge is similar to a USB hub in that it extends the number of possible connections.

How do you connect your router to an existing network if I have say an open network and I want my own private off shoot How do I make a WIFI network using an existing network wirelessly?

You have couple of choices. First is to connect your router to existing network using a cable. And then configure secured wireless network using your router settings. Second is to connect using Bridge configuration. You might run in problems with Bridge due to compatibility issues. You even will have change firmware to DD-WRT (if your router is compatible). Once you set Bridge then you go to router settings and configure secured wireless. And here you might run in problems too because you are basically extending non-secured network in a secured. A lot of routers will not allow you to do that.

Bridge and Router Differentiation Guide?

A bridge router is also called a brouter. It's a network device that is used as both a bridge and a router. The brouter routes all the packets for the protocols that are known and just sends them on as all other packets just like a bridge would. Brouters are operable at the network layer and the data link layer. Networks continue to become more complex, and brouters help solve the problem. It acts as a bridge when there is a network involved, and it acts as a router in a situation where there is an internetwork. These are combination devices.

What are subnet?

A network that has been connected to larger & more powerful network system. Subnets are connected to a larger network by a bridge or router.

Does a bridge separate collision domains?

No a bridge will transmit all network protocols to all ports, without restriction; thus the term "Bridge." A Router in true bridge mode will do the same, unless you implement some form of route management (managed bridge / router).
