I'm not an air conditioning expert, but I would expect that the compressor will run a lot more than it needs to. A 2 ton coil will not cool as much air as a larger capacity 3 ton coil. Experts?
Installing a 3 1/2 ton condenser on a 3 tr evaporator will not function properly. There isn't enough evaporator coil surface area to absorb heat and vaporize refrigerant liquid for its return back to the condenser compressor. What can be done is a 3 ton condenser unit with a 3 1/2 evaporator coil.
Maybe. The coil is not matched to a 2 or 3 ton truck It is matched to the engine and igniton control system. So it may be the same part #.
Absolutely NOT ! you will end up with more problems, and spend more redoing it because it doesn't work together. And besides a 4 ton compressor needs a 4 ton condensor.3 ton condensor will not have the surface area to cool the freon from a hot vapor to a cool liquid, that is needed for optimal performance in air handler, which is also rated for a 4 ton ,due to the coil size and the expansion valve size.
just the condensing unit roughly 1500to2000
If the coil in the air handler is 2.5 tons, yes. The system is mismatched and you may also experience compressor failures due to liquid refrigerant flooding back to the compressor due to the undersized evaporator coil.
Last one I replaced was $8,700
not very well. a 4 ton system needs about 1600 cfm to provide it's full capacity of cooling. a 3 ton furnace puts out about 1200 cfm. in addition, the evap coil typically attached to the furnace needs to match the tonnage of the outdoor unit. so, the evap coil must be 4 tons. If you currently have a 3 ton furnace and evap coil, the system will not work, and you will most likely ruin the compressor in the outdoor unit.
