Success and credibility may depend on the accreditation a personal trainer obtains. There are staggering amounts of organizations that offer personal training accreditation. Choosing the right agency may mean the difference between success and failure in a personal trainer’s career.
The gold standard of the industry has been certification from organizations that are National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA) accredited. However, reputable programs are now offered in state colleges and technical trade schools. A diploma from one of these institutions carries as much weight as a NCCA accreditation. That’s not to say that some of the non-NCCA programs are not as good as the others. They simply do not carry the same prestige as the NCCA programs. However, they can be less expensive and easier to obtain.
The American Council on Exercise (ACE), the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM), the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA), offers some of the NCCA basic personal trainer certification programs. There are more but these are the most prestigious and offer courses and certification in advanced fields of personal training. At NSCA, a bachelor’s degree is required to take some of the courses.
The choice aspiring trainers make should be based on their own research. Talk to other trainers about their certification programs. Contact agencies offering certification and talk to a counselor or administrator about skill levels and aspirations.
Check to see what types of specialty courses are offered. If a trainer is interested in specializing in a certain field like special needs, geriatrics, Pilates or yoga, check the agencies for what programs are offered for these sub-sets. Ask local gyms which accreditations they accept for their personal trainers and work that information into the search.
Personal training certification is an admirable goal and establishes a solid foundation for anyone interested in physical fitness or teaching people about a healthy lifestyle through exercise and nutrition.
