Updating your bedding is a quick, easy way to make your bedroom look completely refreshed. Bedding can be purchased from any number of retailers, from department stores to warehouse super centers. Any of these retailers is likely to advertise some pretty attractive prices, but to get a really good value, and new bedding that will be with you through the long haul, you have to do some comparison shopping to find the bedding that is best for you.

The first thing to think about is color. If you're not going to be painting your walls and doing other remodeling, then you'll want to choose bedding colors that go with your current color scheme. This doesn't mean that your bedding should match your walls and you might do well to look for a contrasting color. So if your walls are a neutral color, consider buying a bold red comforter. If your walls are a vibrant blue, you might prefer to choose bedding colors that are more neutral and unlikely to clash with your paint.

Give careful consideration to the quality of the materials used to make the bedding as well. With sheet sets, you can't go wrong by buying the higher thread count version. Steer clear of sheets with a thread count of less than 180. Thread counts up to 12,000 may be available, but it's probably not necessary to go to such an extreme for a good night's sleep. Keeping your thread count somewhere between 180 and 500 is probably a pretty safe bet, and it will be easier on your wallet.

Before buying bedding, make sure to understand the washing instructions. They should sound reasonable to you and be instructions you feel confident you'll live up to. If you have pets who sleep on the bed with you and consequently you like to wash your comforter often, it's probably not a good idea to buy bedding that must be dry cleaned. Look for something you can put in your home washing machine to keep it looking new and smelling fresh. Consider a duvet comforter for easier home washing.
