Hispanic students may believe they lack the financial resources to attend college. Even those with excellent grades, a record of community service and demonstrated leadership skills may be discouraged by the high cost of a college education. Fortunately, there are many scholarship opportunities available exclusively to Hispanic students, as well as many intended for a broader student base.

• The Jackie Robinson Foundation (www.jackierobinson.org) offers a scholarship of up to $6,000 per year for minority students who are U.S. citizens and have been accepted to a four-year college or university.

• The Hispanic College Fund, Inc. (www.hispanicfund.org) has many opportunities for Hispanic students. Some of these include: National Hispanic Explorers Scholarship Program for students pursuing degrees in science, computer science, engineering or NASA-related fields; First In My Family Scholarship Program for students who will be the first in their family to attend college and plan to pursue a degree in business; and, Hispanic College Fund Scholarship Program for needy students pursuing a degree in business, computer science, engineering or a business-related major. See the website for details and more programs.

• The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) National Scholarship Fund (www.lulac.org) (LNSF) works through local LULAC councils to award scholarships in their communities. Two scholarships currently available are a General Electric Scholarship and a General Motors scholarship. Both scholarships are administered by LULAC, are intended for engineering students, and are open to current college students. See the LULAC website for details.

• The Hispanic Scholarship Fund (www.hsf.net) awards scholarships of $1,000 - $3,000 to community college, university and graduate students of Hispanic heritage on a competitive basis.

• The Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund (MALDEF) Law School Scholarship Program (www.maldef.org) awards $3,000 - $7,000 each year to deserving law school students who are committed to serving the Latino community.

• The HSF/NSHMBA Scholarship Program (www.nshmba.org) is administered by the Hispanic Scholarship Fund and awards scholarships from $2,500 - $15,000 to outstanding Latinos pursuing master’s degrees in management/business, either part-time or full-time.

In addition, there are opportunities for Hispanic students of American Indian heritage and those pursuing advanced degrees. For dedicated Hispanic students, college is within reach.
