A large number of individuals suffer from depression and its effects on daily living. For those diagnosed with depression it is important to know available and effective treatment options. Medication and counseling are both viable treatments for treating depression. Utilized individually medication and counseling are proven effective, however combining the two leads to even greater improvement. Counseling can help with learning to cope with events that lead to depression, engaging in new, more positive behaviors, and understanding how depression affects you and your relationships.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of counseling for teenage depression?

The advantages of counseling for teenagers that are experiencing depression include getting the necessary help they need, learning how to cope with their dark thoughts, having a trusted adult to discuss real problems with, and sometimes getting the right medication to ensure their mental health. The main disadvantage would be that many teens do not want to be labeled as "depressed;" it's a taboo word among teenagers. And many are concerned if they go into counseling for their depression that their friends and/or family may look at them differently. However, if a teen is feeling continued depression either after a traumatic event or simply just because of day to day stresses, they should seek help.
