Often abbreviated as UIM, this coverage protects non-fault parties when property damage is sustained as a result of an auto accident. If the at-fault driver is not carrying sufficient liability insurance to cover all damage costs, UIM will usually take care of the gap.

UIM And State Laws

Even if a particular state does not require drivers to carry this type of coverage the law forces insurance providers to make it available to any driver who wants it. If this coverage is mandated by law the insurance quotes given a customer will include this cost. Many states also have laws that require insurance companies to offer UIM when a quote for uninsured motorist protection is given. Uninsured motorist protection insurance is separate from UIM and covers non-fault parties when the at-fault driver is carrying no liability protection.

Some states will not require an insurance company to honor a UIM claim if the insured was injured in an accident involving a second car owned by him or her. Some policies do not cover the cost of property damage or injuries caused by a person related to the insured. Insurance companies will also want to make sure the at-fault party cannot pay these expenses. If it is thought the at-fault driver can cover the costs of damage and/or personal injuries even without liability insurance, UIM claims may not be honored in some cases.

Stacking UIM Coverage

Insurance shoppers are advised to consult with their insurance provider concerning stacked UIM coverage. Owners of multiple vehicles may be able to use the available UIM protection on two different vehicles to cover the damage costs or medical expenses suffered in an accident. Even if only one of the vehicles covered is damaged by another driver, non-fault parties may be able to use the coverage on both vehicles to pay for damages to the vehicle involved in the accident.
