Transmissions are very expensive, and because they are used constantly throughout a car’s operation, they are bound to wear out, usually before the rest of the vehicle. Transmission repair is a sticky situation and should only be conducted by trusted and well-known mechanics.

More often than not, transmission repair involves the replacement of the transmission itself. When transmissions fail, they generally do so catastrophically, since the destruction of one gear places extreme stress on the other gears. The replacement of a transmission is complex, time consuming and expensive, and usually not worth it on older model vehicles. When replacing a transmission, the best option is to order a replacement one directly from the manufacturer, however this is rarely feasible since most transmissions are well built enough to outlast their production run. In this case, it is usually necessary to get a used transmission from a junkyard. Ideally, it will be from a car that was totaled due to a wreck, preferably while it still had low mileage. Used transmissions should always be carefully inspected for manufacturing defects and wear before being installed.

Sometimes, however, it is merely necessary to replace a single gear, or otherwise replace single parts of the transmission. This is still expensive and time consuming, as it is very labor intensive to remove the transmission and take it apart. However, it is much less expensive, and generally replacement parts are easier to find, since often they can be pulled from transmissions which are otherwise destroyed or defective.

Transmission repair should only be undertaken by a trusted mechanic, since even a small defect can cause the transmission to fail again. The newest parts available should always be used, and drivers should take note of oddities in the performance of the new or repaired transmission, since these may be signs that the transmission was not properly installed or has some defective components. It is not unusual for a transmission to need some time to “settle,” especially when it was repaired instead of replaced, but rattling or burning of Transmission Fluid is generally a sign that the transmission is defective.
