Finding the Right Church

For people who have not been to church in a while, or for those who are new to an area, finding the right church can be daunting. Different churches, even within the same denomination, can vary greatly in how they do things and the type of atmosphere they project.

First, decide on a denomination. For people who already have a church affiliation, this may be fairly easy. For those who aren’t affiliated with a church, this may be more time consuming. An internet search may be helpful to learn about the teachings of a church body.

Next, decide on a church to visit. Many web sites of church denominations have listings of their congregations, so it is easy to find a church nearby. Also, asking friends and family members about their church may help decide on one to visit. Look at the church’s web site or call the church office to find out when services are held.

Then, attend a service. While there, pay attention to the things going on and the people there. Are the people friendly? Do they introduce themselves, or do they ignore visitors? Does the pastor or church leader greet you? What is the size of the congregation, and are you comfortable with it? Some people prefer a large church that grants anonymity, while others prefer a smaller, close-knit congregation. Read the bulletin or service folder. This will be helpful in following along during the service. The bulletin will also show what kinds of activities are available at the church. Most importantly, pay attention to what is said and done during the service. Is it consistent with your beliefs? Finally, sign the guest book if there is one. This will let the pastor and church leaders know you came and be able to follow up with a visit or phone call.

After attending a service, decide if this is the church you want to attend. Call the pastor or with any questions you may have. If you decide to attend this church, continue attending and ask how to become a member. If not, continue your search until you find your new church home.
