Getting Low Income Apartments

“Affordable housing” is a term used for residences with housing costs “affordable” to middle-income Americans. Say “low income apartments” to most people and they’ll have visions of dirty tenement buildings strung with laundry lines, crawling with kids and myriad tentacled creatures as well. Crime goes along with the stereotype and so does drug trafficking. None of that needs to be the case. There is a lot of low income apartments available in thoroughly habitable places.

Of course, with the current economy, the number of available low income apartments has become even more important than ever. There is also a low of competition for them. To find apartments in areas that are safe where people would want to live, is another question entirely. Those are the most sought-after low cost apartments of all.

Some states like Oregon have enforced rent control. Others such as New York have a subsidized housing lottery “to ensure fair and equitable distribution” with any available low income apartments. The Federal Section 8 program provides very lost cost housing many of which are low income apartments.

Surprisingly, you can often find such apartments simply by hitting the streets and looking for them. Ask family and friends. Apartment owners will sometimes cultivate contacts with people to find “preferable” Section 8 candidates (people with no history of drugs or crime) though discrimination is illegal for any other reasons such as race, gender, and sexual preference.

Affordable apartments are often findable just by hitting the net. The internet has become a wonderful resource for residence-seekers of all kinds especially for those seeking lower cost habitats. There also is a lot of information about low income residences that are available through various local and Federal programs/opportunities.

Local newspapers can also be an excellent source of information (or newspapers in the area in which you are seeking an apartment). If you can’t afford a newspaper, there are often a variety of different newspapers available in libraries. There is a lot of information available -- almost too much. It is up to the individual involved to seek it out and put it to good use.
