Tourists flock to Goa, India, in droves, and Goa is often considered one of the best places to go on vacation. Goa is a land of hypnotic beauty. It evokes nostalgia, and many of the tourists are return visitors.

The climate is warm and inviting, and the land is rich in historical churches, cathedrals, monuments and forts. It’s festivals are outbursts of colorful pageantry, and the are people cordial and gracious. Goa is at once stimulating and completely relaxing.

The beaches run for miles, a traveler’s haven. Sun and sand encircle medieval towns and exotic villages. There are also many beaches: Anjuna Beach, Baga Beach, Chapora Beach, and Colva Beach, each slightly different, each offering a unique slice of Goa’s unique seascape beauty.

Panjim, the capital city, is a collection of churches and palaces amidst homes with tiled roofs, suspended balconies, and carved pillars.

The diverse flora and fauna are well-protected by a number of sanctuaries like the Salim Ali Bird sanctuary, the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary, the Cottigao Wildlife Sanctuary, and the Bondla Wildlife Sanctuary.

Arts & Entertainment

There is much to explore in Goa.

Beautiful and otherworldly, Panjim, the capital, is perhaps best known for its churches and cathedrals, elegant structures like the Church of Our Lady of the Rosary, the Church Of St. Francis of Assisi, the Church of St. Cajetan, and the Se Cathedral. The great architecture comes from the Portuguese era. Besides churches, there are also many forts and temples to explore.

Anjuna Flea Market is another fashionable place to visit. It’s a huge market, with hundreds of items at cheap prices, a place where bargains are made and the art of negotiation refined.

The beaches, of course, are what make Goa one of the best vacation spots in the world. Luxury and budget hotels offer a home to people from all over the world. Besides sun bathing and strolling aimlessly, there are also many water sports available for visitors to enjoy.

Less well-known are the river cruises. The trips are made from Zuari Bay and on Mandovi River. The Mandovi River cruise runs all the way to Aldona, and the flora along the river is a verdant green. River cruises are made three times a day.

Food and Drink

Goan food can best be defined as a cultural potpourri, the cuisine commingles Portuguese, Arabic, and Indian Food. Of the Portuguese dishes, the favorite choices are cabidela, caldeirada, and racheiado.

Although most of India is completely vegetarian, restaurants here carry lightly spiced fish, chicken, beef, and pork dishes. Naturally sea foods are a big part of dining, and apart from many fish choices, there are also jumbo pomfrets, crabs, lobsters, and prawns. Rice and flat breads complement the meals. Additionally, soups, salads, pickles, and curries are prevalent on dining tables. Dishes are commonly flavored with Kokum, a sour red fruit, coconut milk, tamarind, and red chilies. And it that’s not enough, there are also spicy chutneys to further titillate taste buds. Meals are often served with beer and wine, or Feni, a local drink.

There are many excellent restaurants, but the most frequented are George Restaurant and Hospedaria Venite.
