Online classes are very common these days with many well established colleges embracing this medium of education. Online courses can be a good option for many people who work full time, or who need a specific class but the class is not available on campus. Going to school in your computer can be strange at first, but you may end up loving it.
In order to do well online, you need to understand first how the class will work. Read up on it, contact the instructor or past students and ask questions even before the class starts. Don’t forget to test your system and if you have problems, contact the IT/student service department. Make sure your computer is in good shape and have a plan B in case your computer or your internet provider has issues during class. One idea is to go to libraries that provide free computers and network connections.
Usually a course’s virtual classroom is located on a website with online places for lectures, videos and discussions. Sometimes there are virtual “rooms” for students to meet up during group projects. In some colleges, one hour a week for chatting is required and it can be fun, with all students and instructor getting together to talk about issues, problems and ideas, as if everyone were in a real live classroom.
Many students are surprised with the amount of work involved in an online class. It takes time and you need to budget your time wisely. Don’t assume that because it is online, it is easy and relaxed. Quite the opposite is true. Many courses have homework due at certain dates, projects, including group projects, individual papers and final exams. It is a rigorous process.
An odd ball feature of online courses is the “discussion”, often graded for content and number of posts in a certain period. This is how instructors measure attendance and whether learning is really taking place. Discussions may look on surface like informal postings, but don’t be fooled by it. If you just make small talk or just agree with someone, it may not count for participation. To count, a post must show that you understand a topic. You could post a link to a pertinent website and make a comment about it that shows you are learning the topic. Try to write posts containing at least three sentences. Avoid posting one word, or one sentence only.
Be aware that going to school online can be a lonely experience. You really need to motivate yourself to do all the work required. Get yourself in a schedule so that you have a specific time each week to study, do the work and participate in class. It is too easy to forget about due dates and other requirements in an online course.
Going to school online can be challenging and can be a good experience for many students, who do not need to drive, park a car, or find a classroom. It is a different way of learning and it is very efficient and effective for many students.
Majoring in language and literature, many students find they have limited career opportunities. With a bachelor's degree, a student's only real option is to become a teacher or author. If you want to add value to your literature degree, then you should consider the possibility of attending law school. Many people with literature degrees end up going to law school.
