Lexington, Kentucky, is often referred to as the Horse Racing Capitol of the World. Selected as the host of the 2010 FEI World Equestrian Games, Lexington is a haven for horse fanatics. There are several great racing tracks located in this city, but the following horse racing tracks are some of the best in the nation.
KeenelandThis historic horse racing facility is famous for its extensive horse library, which contains over 10,000 volumes on breeding, racing and anything else to do with horses. In 2009, the Horseplayers Association of North America ranked Keeneland the number one thoroughbred racetrack in North America. First opened in 1936, Keeneland is currently listed as a National Historic Landmark. Keeneland’s historic architecture and natural beauty make it one of the most scenic racetracks of North America.
The Red MileOpened in 1875, The Red Mile is the second oldest harness track on earth. Like Keeneland, it is a great site for history buffs, with its Historic Red Barn (which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places). The Red Mile has a spectacular multiple story clubhouse which features a lounge, dance floor, two buffets, and several large flat screen televisions. The Red Mile’s name originated from its mile long racetrack which is made from red clay. The events at this racetrack are all harness races, in which horses pull sulkies (two-wheeled carts) as they race.
