The materials these ceiling tiles are made from are very porous, which is another way that the tiles transfer the sound waves into the dead air between the tiles and the ceiling instead of transferring it back toward the room. If the acoustic tiles were made from a dense or more solid material they would not have the ability to absorb and transfer sound waves at all. The softer material allows the tile to keep the room quieter.
