To keep your landscape beautiful and healthy you need to fertilize your plants, trees and lawn. Fertilizers contain nutrients that are vital to healthy plant development. Often our soil does not contain adequate amounts of these nutrients. Fertilizer is a way of boosting the soil’s nutrients and offering them to the plant’s roots. You can fertilize your own landscape. There’s no need to hire a company. It’s easy and requires only a few pieces of equipment.

•Understand what fertilizer is comprised of. Every bag of fertilizer displays three numbers which indicate the amount of nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium. For example, if your lawn fertilizer displays the numbers 23-9-13, the bag contains 23% nitrogen, 9% phosphorous, and 13% potassium, respectively. Nitrogen is responsible for giving your grass its green color, phosphorous encourages deep root development, and potassium is necessary for general plant health.

•Select the appropriate fertilizer. For lawns there are many commercial fertilizers available. Some fertilizers have a high nitrogen content. Choose this if your grass is yellow. Other fertilizers contain herbicides which control weeds. Use this if your lawn has weeds. Fertilizers for shrubbery are generally lower in nitrogen. A mixture of 10-10-10 is a good general fertilizer for shrubs and plants. Specialty plants such as palms, azaleas, and gardenias require specific fertilizers designed for their particular needs.

•Know how and when to apply fertilizer. Lawns require fertilization in the early spring, and again in the fall. Use a broadcast spreader or a drop spreader. Follow directions on the bag for the proper spreader setting, and for application tips. Shrubs and plants may also be fertilized in early spring and in the fall. Sprinkle the granular fertilizer beneath the drip line of the plants. The bag will indicate how much fertilizer to use according to the size of your plants. Fertilize trees by spreading fertilizer beneath the drip line, also. Never allow fertilizer to come in contact with the tree’s trunk. Water fertilizer in generously.

What is the difference between a foliar fertilizer and a fertigation fertilizer?

A foliar fertilizer is one which is applied directly to the leaves of a growing crop. It's normally done with a tractor- or self-propelled spraying rig. The concentrations are usually quite low because the plant leaves can only absorb a limited amount of any nutrient, and so this practice is normally limited to the application of micronutrients, those which the plant needs only in very tiny amounts. Fertigation fertilizer, on the other hand, is the application of any fertilizer through an irrigation system. The target for the fertilizer is the root zone of the crop, not the leaves as with a foliar product. While the amounts applied are still relatively limited, this method is normally used to apply small amounts of the major nutrients in cases where it is difficult to get enough fertilizer applied using regular methods, or when excess precipitation may have washed nutrients out of the soil. Even though the irrigation system may apply water and fertilizer to the leaves, the intent is to wash it off into the root zone.

Why is miracle grow so good?

I like to use it because it is a balanced fertilizer. It contains even amounts of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. As to how effective any given fertilizer is will depend on what you are trying to grow. If you apply a fertilizer that is rich in nitrogen and little of the others (phosphorus and potassium), for example, then the plant will have a relative tendency to grow more leaves and less roots and flowers. This isn't good for your roses and zinnias, but higher nitrogen is great for your lawn. So using a balanced fertilizer is good all around, covers all the bases.

How does artificial fertilizer work to enhance plant growth?

Fertilizers, artificial or natural are a source of nitrogen compounds (and other mineral salts) that plants need to grow. Thus if fertilizer is supplied to the plant roots in the quantities they need, these plants will grow and produce more than plants growing in soils where there is not enough of these nutrients. Note however that over application of fertilizer will harm the plants, farmers need to analyze their soil before applying fertilizer so that they only apply the amount needed. This maximizes plant growth and minimizes the cost.

Do plants grow best in chemical fertilizer organic fertilizer or no fertilizer?

A mixture of organic and inorganic fertilizers is recommended.

Do you fertilize before rain or after it rains?

Before it rains, if using granular fertilizer, so that it will "melt" into the soil and become available for use by the plant roots.....IF you are using liquid fertilizer you would apply it either on the leaves, or by drenching the soil around the plant at least 24 hours before a rain occurs.

When is the best time to water yard in the summer?

Apply fertilizer in the evening when it starts to cool down. Applying fertilizer during the day time can possibly case the leave of the plants to burn where in contact with the fertilizer. It depends on the weather. If you have full sun, it's better to apply fertilizer in the early evening, around 4, so that when you water it in it won't burn up your grass.

What do you prefer manure over fertilizer?

I personally prefer some of both. Manure provides bonding sites for the fertilizer which I apply afterwards, and improves the soil tilth.
