Window tint is an attractive addition to any vehicle that also serves as a privacy enhancement. Unfortunately, installation is expensive. The good news is that the materials are not, so you can save a great deal of money if you’re willing to install it yourself. Here’s an overview of the process, which requires far more patience than skill.

1. Purchase the window tint.

There are DIY kits, but it’s cheaper to buy it by the roll, which will be ~$20. Just make sure the roll is wide enough, and that the material is a legal density for your state. A 10-foot roll is enough for most sedans.

2. Gather the supplies.

In addition to the film, you’ll need a squeegee, a Bondo card, a bone tool, a hobby knife, razors, a blow dryer, small sponges, and a clean spray bottle. Fill the spray bottle with a dish soap solution.

3. Precut the film to the right shape for each window.

There should be a 0.25-gap between the edge of the glass and the film. The exception to this is the top edge of roll-down windows. Set the pieces aside in a clear, clean area that you’ve prepared ahead of time.

Note: For the rear window, you must cut the film into individual panels that fit between the defroster lines. For the front window, cut the film to the desired width. In most states, it’s illegal to cover the front window more than several inches.

4. Clean each window.

Use the spray bottle to clean the windows thoroughly. Use the razor for stubborn grime, and then remove residue and excess water with the squeegee.

Warning: Be careful using the razor blade on the rear window since you can destroy the defroster.

5. Apply the tint to the window.

This is the most intimidating step for the novice, but there’s really not much to it. Just take your time applying it, and use the bone tool to get the tint beyond the window seal, and use the Bondo card to get it into the corners.

6. Seal the window tint.

The final step involves removing air and moisture between the tint and the window. Use a clean squeegee in a horizontal smoothing motion while heating the tint with the blow dryer. This isn’t hard, but it’s important to get all of it since this is what will cause it to bubble.
