Putting out a feeder with seeds should attract birds. You also need to provide them with a place to make a nest. Putting up a birdhouse should do the trick. Also provide them with fresh water for drinking.

Put things in the area of the bird house that a bird would need...food, water and nesting material. If the house is built in the right place, at the right height and has the right size entrance for the type of birds you wish to attract#, all you need to do is wait. The sound of water running or dripping draws them to the area better than food. Nesting materials can be things from nature such as straw and hay, twigs, vines, grasses, other plant debris, leaves, dead flower stems, and other yard and garden material (free from chemicals). Hummingbirds need spider webs. So don't be too tidy with the clean up after yard work and leave some of these in place for the birds to find and use. You can also put things out in the area for them to use like clean pieces of cotton string and yarn cut in short lengths (approx. 3 - 4 inches), dog and other animal/human hair, clean cotton balls, strips of cotton fabrics (approx. 1 x 4 inch torn strips) washed and chemical-free.

Make sure you position the bird house correctly, somewhere where the species you hope to attract will feel secure (safe from predators) and have a source of food and nesting material close by. Make sure the design of the bird box is appropriate for the species found within your area.

The shape, height, and size of the birdhouse and the opening and perch leading to the house are different depending on the specific species you are attracting. Choose the right sizes and shapes, heights and placement for the species you want to attract.

Water, and the sound of running or dripping water will lure birds and if you have the proper house for the birds in your area, they will find the house and move in if there is also food and nesting material they need nearby.

Adding a bird bath or possibly several bird baths to your garden, deck, balcony, or front yard landscape will attract birds. Observing birds at feeders and bird baths can be a very entertaining and relaxing way to spend time. There are several points to consider when creating a habitat to attract birds.

The styles of bird baths vary. One important choice to make is whether to purchase a bird bath with a heating element or one without. It cost very little to operate a heated bird bath. Choosing a heated bird bath does not limit your design choices. There are heated baths on pedestals, styles that mount onto a deck, or baths that fit into a stand. If paying a few pennies a day to heat a bird bath doesn’t appeal to you, you might want to explore the option of a bird bath that uses solar power to heat a low voltage pump.

Several different types of bird baths can be incorporated into a large outdoor landscape or garden area. You can mix pedestal baths with styles that sit low to the ground. It important to place the baths near some plants and shrubs. This provides an element of safety for the birds. In the summer months, it is good to have the bird bath in a shady location so that the water stays cooler. Adding a few feeders to your landscape will also help attract birds. They can dine, drink, bathe, and entertain you.

Bird baths can be placed on a deck or balcony if you have little or no yard space. There are some very attractive bird baths that can be mounted on deck railing. Corner baths are great for a small balcony. Hanging bird baths can be hung from a hook on a deck or patio or hung on a shepherd’s pole in a garden.

The type of material and the design of the bird bath is an issue only in relation to what fits into your landscape design and what you find visually attractive. Birds simply want safety and availability. It is essential that all bird baths be cleaned regularly to prevent bacteria and mold.

Just putting a nesting box in one's yard is enough to attract birds. Birds use nesting boxes to build a nest to protect their young, and then they lay eggs in the nest and raise their babies.
